Updating TinyCore Linux

On February 26, 2013 an update was announced for the 'Core' of TinyCore Linux. The latest is 4.7.5.

The announcement can be read here.

Although TinyCore Linux is a small download:

  • 8MB - Core
  • 12MB - TinyCore
  • 64MB -  CorePlus

If you have TinyCore set up the way you like it, and you don't want to re-install, there is an easy way to upgrade TinyCore. I tested this with 4.7.3 and 4.7.4 although it should in theory work with all 4.x versions.

Download two files from the TinyCore distribution files:

  • For 32-bit users: core.gz and vmlinuz
  • For 64-bit users: core64.gz and vmlinuz64

These files should be saved into the 'boot' folder (in my case it was: /mnt/sdc1/tce/boot). This overwrites the previous version. Reboot and you are running 4.7.5. I tested this with 32-bit versions of 4.7.3 and 4.7.4 and so far no problems with anything that was already installed.

Thanks to the TinyCore team for all their work and effort.
