The Mayans may, or may not, have predicted the end of the world as we know it. Allegedly December 21, 2012 is going to be the end.
If you look at the world, as a whole, it is falling apart. Tsunamis, tornadoes, and other natural disasters are on the rise. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of the man-made disasters.
But it is not just the planet that is falling apart; mankind too is slowly edging closer, and closer, to self-destruction. Murder, rape, and other serious crimes rise each year. The overall moral level of humanity is at an all-time low.
Luckily, some may say, it is not the fault of anyone. We can all live 'guilt free' knowing that the corruption, and ultimately the destruction, of mankind was happening before anyone reading this was even born. In fact it has been since the beginning of time if the Bible is to be believed.
The first two chapters of the book of Genesis describe God designing and building everything. From outer space to fish. All is good until Adam and Eve, the supposed first humans, show up.
There is no nice way to put it. Adam and Eve screwed it up for everyone. If Eve had not listened to the serpent, and in turn Adam had not listened to Eve, all would be well. But no; these two ingrates have the whole garden of Eden and are told not to eat the fruit of one tree. The serpent comes along and convinces Eve to eat; and it is all downhill for humanity from there.
But before everyone starts thanking Adam, Eve, and the serpent; it may not have been their fault. Adam and Eve may have actually been the second attempt at creating mankind.
Genesis 1:27 says: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." (KJV Gen 1:27)
Genesis 2:2 says: "And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." (KJV Gen 2:2)
Genesis 2:7 says: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (KJV Gen 2:7)
Genesis 2:18 says: "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him." (KJV Gen 2:18)
Genesis 2:21-22 says: "And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man." (KJV Gen 2:21-22)
So, reading Genesis 1:27 - 2:22 it basically states God created man and woman, rested on the seventh day; and then creates man and woman.
There are two possibilities. The first is that Genesis 2 is recounting, in more detail, the creation of mankind; and is merely repeating some of the more important details of Genesis 1. The second possibility is that God created man and woman, rested, realized he had screwed up, and created man and woman again.
Although the second possibility seems a little way out there it does tie in with Jewish folklore that Eve was not the first woman. The folklore says that God created Adam and Lilith from the same soil; in contrast to Eve who was later created from Adam's rib. Lilith claims that since she and Adam were created in the same way they were equal and she refuses to submit to him; and they bicker. It doesn't state what happens to Lilith but there are a fair few possibilities. One is that God decides to banish Lilith, put Adam in a deep sleep, and he creates Eve. Adam wakes, without a rib, forgetting all about Lilith and thinking Eve is the first woman.
But whichever way you look at it Adam and Eve start the corruption of mankind; eating of the tree of knowledge.
Briefly, if you want to get technical about it, Eve can be let off the hook somewhat as knew nothing about the tree. God tells Adam about the tree, then Eve is created, but he doesn't tell Adam to pass the 'rule' on.
Whether it was Adam, or Adam and Eve, is neither here nor there really. It is just the start. The whole of the book of Genesis catalogs all the initial corruption of mankind.
Genesis 4:8 - Cain kills Abel: "And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him." (KJV Gen 4:8) (Murder)
Genesis 4:9 - Cain lies to God: "And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?" (KJV Gen 4:9) (Lying)
Genesis 6:7 - God destroys almost everything: "And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them." (KJV Gen 6:7) (Dictatorship)
Genesis 7:23 - God floods the earth: "And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark." (KJV Gen 7:23) (Mass Genocide)
Genesis 9:21 - Noah gets drunk: "And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent." (KJV Gen 9:21) (Alcoholism)
Genesis 14:11 - The first thievery: "And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way." (KJV Gen 14:11) (Theft)
Genesis 14:12 - Abram's brother's son is taken: "And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed." (KJV Gen 14:12) (Kidnapping)
Genesis 16:2 - Abram has a child by a handmaid: "And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai." (KJV Gen 16:2) (Adultery)
Genesis 17:23 - Circumcision to seal a covenant: "And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him." (KJV Gen 17:23) (Mutilation)
Genesis 19:36 - Lot and his two daughters: "Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father." (KJV Gen 19:36) (Incest)
And that is just a few examples from the first few chapters of Genesis. If, and it is an if, Genesis really does show this is how mankind first started on the earth it is really no wonder that generation after generation things are bound to get worse. If you read the whole Bible you see, even through the time period it supposedly covers, humanity just drifts deeper and deeper on slippery slope of corruption.
