Photoshop Photo To Line Art Action

I was working on something and needed to change a photo to line art (or drawing). For a few seconds my mind went blank, and I relied on my trusty bookmarks, and I pulled up a tutorial on Photoshop Buzz.

It is a great tutorial, and explains everything. Basically there are 6 steps:

  1. Ctrl + J - Duplicate the original.
  2. Ctrl + Shift + U - Desaturate the duplicate.
  3. Ctrl + J - Duplicate the desaturated layer.
  4. Ctrl + I - Invert the 2nd desaturated layer.
  5. Change the blend mode of the 2nd desaturated layer to Color Dodge.
  6. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur  (Usually between 1-3 pixels).
Then to save myself some time, in case of future brain freezes, I completed the above steps and recorded as an action. The action (Photo To Line Art) can be downloaded here: Photoshop Photo To Line Art Action.

And this is how the original picture looks:

And when the action has been run it looks like:

And that is all there is to it.

Note: When testing this out I did have a few high resolution images which required a higher pixel count on the Gaussian blur.  The highest I had to use was 12px. That is the reason the Gaussian blur section of the action is a dialog, as it varies from image to image.
